Day 39, 31 May, Nero Into Acton RV Resort

I camped just 4 miles from the Acton RV Resort last night, so thankfully I didn’t have far to walk in the heat before getting there. I left camp at 7 am, got to the campground around 9:30, and spent the the day resting, resupplying and catching up with other hikers.

Probably not the best RV on the market, but maybe would do in a pinch

Leaving camp, it was hot already. I stuck with my original strategy from yesterday, stopping whenever in the shade. Out of camp I was straight into a steep climb which left me exposed to the hot sun.

Sandy hills and dry scrub leaving the mountains behind

I walked along the hilltops for a while, and up there I saw a baby rattlesnake coiled up to sleep right on the trail. Some careful navigation got me past it, and then I could begin descending to the park.

Tiny rattlesnake, cute but dangerous. The baby ones are worse apparently because they don’t regulate how much venom they use if they bite

On the way down I could see the campground from above and it looked so good. A little later, I’m walking into the RV resort. They offer camping for $25 which includes a shower with towel, body wash and shampoo included. The park also has a pool, and plenty of shady flat spots.

The RV Resort visible from the ridge above, but still an hour walk away

Once set up at camp, I get a ride into the town of Acton. The truck cab is full already, but luckily it has a huge tray so we fit another 5 people in the back. Driving into Acton and sitting in the tray was a blast.

Heading into town for another resupply mission

In Acton, we visit the store for resupply. There is also someone in the carpark cooking chicken and kebabs on a charcoal grill. Inside the store they sell this chicken with rice and hummus as well as their own store made pizzas.

Carpark charcoal chicken ftw

In one stop we sort out resupply, lunch and leftovers for dinner. Not long after we finish in the store, our ride shows up again to take us back. The trail angel here spends all day driving hikers around, he’s an absolute legend and does this purely out of the goodness of his heart.

Half chicken, rice and hummus to go
And a large pepperoni pizza too

Back at camp, we spend the afternoon relaxing, eating, swimming in the pool, and organizing our resupply. Tomorrow’s plan is to get out early and walk through Agua Dulce for lunch on the way to camp on the other side of town.
