We spent the day enjoying Timberline Lodge today. Any time we can wake up casually and leave our tents set up is such a relaxing start to the day. From our campsites above the lodge, we each had excellent views across Oregon.

The first thing we wanted to do was visit the breakfast buffet which we’d heard was fantastic. The buffet did not disappoint, this was probably the best breakfast on the trail. We each got through several plates of ham steaks, breakfast sausages, scrambled eggs with bacon, mini breakfast burritos, mini pancakes, fruit sorbet, mini pastries, all the extra toppings to go with, and of course unlimited coffee refills. Not only were we stuffed, but the quality of the food was really good too.

After breakfast we explored the lodge for a while, and I also took a bus ride into government camp with Wow to get a small resupply, just enough to get through to Cascade Locks in three days time.

We returned to the lodge and spent the afternoon relaxing there. The exterior of the lodge was used as the setting for The Shining’s Overlook Hotel. They keep the axe, wielded by Jack Nicholson, behind the desk. We asked to see the axe and they let us take pictures with it in the lobby.

We had dinner in the restaurant upstairs before calling it in. By the time we’d finished it had begun to rain outside, so I rushed to my tent to stay warm and dry for the night.
